Switching Gears Towards Climate Solutions

While we’ve been busy working on technical and policy solutions for climate change in earnest for well over a decade, the work on building public support for solutions has lagged well behind.

Stories like the one below (Climate Change is Putting World at Risk of Irreversible Changes…) are motivating to some of us, but for most, they indicate a problem that’s beyond our ability to solve, leading to fatalism and resignation. There are no solutions here. No path forward. No inspiration and empowerment. Only danger and fear.

Meanwhile, it’s encouraging to note that so many people and initiatives in America are shifting their priorities toward engaging people and building support for climate solutions. That support, in turn, will facilitate or even demand greater effort for technological solutions and policy solutions.

Research on social change in America indicates that society changes when institutions change. Institutions change when their leaders change. At ecoAmerica, through MomentUs we are working to build leadership and institutional support, which will lead to public support and political will for solutions. We welcome and need your participation and support in this endeavor.

There are other valuable ways to build the necessary public support. The important thing is that if we’re going to make a difference, we need to find and do things a) that will make a tangible, meaningful difference, b) that can happen in a relevant time frame, and c) that we can actually accomplish. Let’s all do what we can.
